Hire drivers and warehouse staff

Temporary cover, temp-to-perm and permanent hires: Class 1, Class 2, 7.5 tonne and van drivers, forklift operators, warehouse operatives and transport office staff. Give us the job and we come back on who can cover it.

Three kinds of cover

Temporary
A driver or operative for a shift, a week or a peak. Nalon pays the worker and invoices you for the hours on the signed timesheet.
Temp-to-perm
The worker starts as temporary cover and you can take them on permanently. The terms for that are agreed in writing before the first shift, so the cost of a transfer is known from the start.
Permanent
We recruit for a permanent vacancy, from a Class 1 driver to a warehouse supervisor or transport manager. The fee terms are agreed in writing before the search starts.

What we need to book

A booking takes six details. Give us as many as you have and ring the office for the rest.

Vehicle
The type and weight: artic, rigid, 7.5 tonne, van, tipper or tanker, or the forklift truck type.
Licence
The category, such as C+E, C, C1 or B, and any card the job needs: Driver CPC, digi card, ADR or a forklift certificate.
Start
The date and time, and how long the booking runs, for example Monday 6am for two weeks.
Place
The site address and the delivery area, so we can match drivers who can reach it.
Shift
Days, nights, tramping or weekends, and the length of the shift.
Site rules
PPE, induction, gate times, parking, welfare and anything in your tacho or hours policy.

How the charge rate is built

A charge rate is made up of five things: the worker’s pay, holiday pay, employer National Insurance on that pay, the employer pension contribution and our margin. The terms we agree with you set out how the rate is built.

The rate depends on the role, the licence category, the shift pattern and the length of the booking. We do not publish rates on this site. We quote them in writing before anyone is supplied.

Terms agreed before we supply

We agree the terms with you in writing before we supply anyone. They cover the rate and how it is built, the hours, the notice for ending a booking and what happens if you take the worker on directly.

The law sets separate rules for the agency side. The Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003 require us to agree terms with the worker, and to give them a key information document, before we provide any services. They also require us to have confirmation of the worker’s identity, and of the experience, training, qualifications and any authorisation the job needs, before we supply them, and to give you that information when we put the worker forward.

Checks before a driver starts

Every driver goes through the same core checks before a first shift. The four below apply to most bookings. The compliance checks page covers the rest, including forklift and ADR.

  • DVLA licence check

We check the licence on the DVLA service with the driver’s check code: the vehicles the driver can drive, penalty points and disqualifications.

  • Driver CPC card

We ask to see the Driver Qualification Card and check the driver’s periodic training record.

  • Digital tachograph card

We ask to see the digi card and check that it is in date and in the driver’s own name.

  • Right to work

We check every worker’s right to work in the UK before the first shift and keep a record of the check.

Questions from operators

How fast can you supply a driver?

We do not promise a time, because it depends on the licence, the site and the notice you give. Ring the office with the details and we tell you whether we can cover the booking.

Who pays the driver?

Nalon pays the driver for the hours on the signed timesheet and invoices you. You do not run payroll for them.

Can I take a temp on permanently?

Yes. The law limits what an agency can charge when a client takes on a temp. A transfer fee term is only enforceable if the contract lets you choose a further hire period instead of the fee, and it cannot be enforced once the relevant period has passed. That period is whichever ends later of 8 weeks after the worker last worked for you through us and 14 weeks after their first day with you through us. The terms set this out before the first shift.

Can you supply a driver with ADR or a forklift ticket?

Where the driver holds it, yes. Tell us the certificate the job needs and we check the certificate and its expiry date before the driver is supplied.

What do we sign for each shift?

A timesheet. Your site contact signs the hours worked and we invoice from the signed timesheet.
