Pin: Birmingham. Square: the Nalon office in Cleckheaton.

Birmingham is the middle of the motorway network. Spaghetti Junction is the Gravelly Hill Interchange, junction 6 of the M6, where the M6 meets the A38(M) Aston Expressway. It also gives access to the A38 Tyburn Road and the A5127 Lichfield Road. The M5 starts at M6 junction 8 at West Bromwich, north-west of the city, and runs south-west to Exeter. National Highways describes M6 junctions 4 to 10a as a dynamic hard shoulder motorway section.

Birmingham has a Class D Clean Air Zone, according to GOV.UK’s table of cities with clean air zones. In a Class D zone charges can apply to heavy goods vehicles, vans, buses, coaches, taxis and cars. GOV.UK gives Euro VI as the minimum standard for heavy goods vehicles, and a vehicle that meets it avoids the charge. Clean air zones operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and the charge period runs from midnight to midnight.

The M6 Toll joins the M6 at junction 3a and meets it again at junction 11a. Its price classes depend on wheels, axles and height at the first axle. A vehicle with more than 2 and up to 6 axles and a height of 1.3 m or over at the first axle is Class 5, and one with more than 6 axles is Class 6.
