Huddersfield is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees, West Yorkshire, and Kirklees Council describes Kirklees as at the centre of the North’s M1 and M62 road and rail network. Huddersfield is linked to the M62 by three junctions: junction 23 (Mount, A640), junction 24 (Ainley Top, A629) and junction 25 (between Brighouse and Cooper Bridge, A644).
Ainley Top is the junction of the A643 and A629 and gives access to M62 junction 24. Kirklees Council says the Cooper Bridge area, at the A62 and A644 near junction 25, suffers from major congestion at peak times, and it runs an A62 to Cooper Bridge Corridor Improvement Scheme. The town’s main radial roads are the A62 (Leeds Road and Manchester Road), the A641 (Bradford Road), the A629 (Halifax Road), the A640 (New Hey Road) and the A642 (Wakefield Road), and an inner ring road, part of the A62, was built in the 1970s.
Huddersfield is not on GOV.UK’s list of charging Clean Air Zones. Bradford, to the north, has one that charges lorries that do not meet the standard, so a run into central Bradford is different from a run within Kirklees.
