Northampton is the county town of Northamptonshire and the administrative centre of the West Northamptonshire unitary authority. The M1 passes it at junctions 15, 15a and 16. Junction 15 connects to the A45, which runs around the south side of the town. Junction 15a is where the A43 joins the M1, and from there the A43 runs with the M1 southbound to junction 15. Junction 16 is the Upper Heyford Interchange, with the A4500 to Northampton and the A45 to Daventry.

The Planning Inspectorate lists the Northampton Gateway Rail Freight Interchange on land west of the A508, south-west of M1 junction 15 and east of the Northampton Loop Line, with a decision dated 9 October 2019. The consented scheme includes an intermodal freight terminal with container storage and HGV parking, new rail sidings and warehousing, a new access to the A508, a bypass of Roade and substantial improvements to M1 junction 15.
East of the town, Brackmills Industrial Estate lies north-east of the village of Hardingstone. Round Spinney is a locality in the north-east of Northampton, east of the A43, and gives its name to an industrial estate and the nearby roundabout. Through Northamptonshire the A43 bypasses Northampton, Kettering and Corby.
