Thurrock is a unitary authority in the East of England, and its freight runs on the M25 and the A13. National Highways names M25 junction 30 as the A13 junction and junction 31 as Lakeside. The Dartford Crossing is also known as the A282 and connects directly at both ends with the M25. It links Essex and Kent by the QEII bridge for southbound traffic and two tunnels for northbound traffic.
Goods vehicles pay to cross. GOV.UK puts goods vehicles with 2 axles in class C and those with more than 2 axles in class D, counting droppable axles whether they are up or down and, for articulated vehicles, only the trailer axles. The Dart Charge applies between 6am and 10pm every day, including weekends and bank holidays. It is free to use outside those hours, and it must be paid by midnight the day after you cross.
Height matters in the tunnels. National Highways says the two northbound tunnels have different height restrictions. When the east tunnel is closed, vehicles under 4.8m high are diverted through the west tunnel, and vehicles between 4.8m and 5.0m high go by the M25 clockwise. Vehicles carrying dangerous goods and abnormal loads must report to the marshalling area on the Kent side and may be escorted through the tunnels.
The ports are on the riverside. DP World London Gateway is at Stanford-le-Hope, and its logistics park is on the same site, within the Thames Freeport. The London Container Terminal is at the Port of Tilbury. GOV.UK’s list of ports of entry in Great Britain has both Tilbury and London Gateway Port as sea traffic locations.
