Waste and recycling drivers and staff
Rigid drivers for refuse collection, skip and hook loaders, grab lorries and tippers moving waste to transfer stations and recycling sites.
The work
Waste haulage covers household rounds, commercial rounds, construction waste and recycling. Refuse collection vehicles, known as RCVs, work fixed rounds with a crew. Skip lorries and hook loaders deliver and collect skips and containers on demand. Grab lorries load from the ground. Tippers and walking-floor artics move loads between transfer stations, recycling plants and disposal sites.
Waste carries legal duties. GOV.UK says a business in England must register with the Environment Agency if it transports waste, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own registration processes. A waste transfer note is needed for each load of non-hazardous waste moved off premises, and a copy has to be kept for 2 years. The driver carries and hands over the paperwork, so the job needs care with documents as well as with the vehicle.
A collection driver follows a round that the operator plans by street or by customer, records missed or contaminated bins, and tips at the site the route names. Start times are set by the operator and the contract, and on-demand skip work follows the day’s orders.
Vehicles and loads
- Refuse collection vehicles with a crew and a rear or side loader
- Skip lorries and hook loaders for skips and roll-on roll-off containers
- Grab lorries and tippers for loose waste and aggregates
- Weighbridge tickets and waste transfer paperwork
Licences, cards and tickets
- Category C (Class 2) for rigid vehicles, and category C+E (Class 1) for artic tippers and walking floors.
- Driver CPC and a digital tachograph driver card, unless the client confirms the vehicle or the work is exempt.
- A site induction at each transfer station and recycling site.
- Protective clothing and boots as the site names.
- Care with paperwork: waste transfer notes, weighbridge tickets and delivery notes.
Shift patterns
- Days
- Collection rounds and skip deliveries through the working day, to the operator’s round or order list.
- Nights
- Some commercial and trade work is done overnight. Night work follows the working time rules.
- Tramping
- Bulk waste and recycling moves between regions can keep a driver away for a night or more, agreed in the booking.
- Weekends
- Waste is produced every day, so Saturday and Sunday rounds and trade collections are part of the pattern.
Checks we run for waste and recycling
Licence and cards
Licence, Driver CPC and digi card are checked before the first shift.
Vehicle experience
We ask which vehicles the driver has run: RCV, skip, hook loader, grab or tipper.
Paperwork
We ask whether the driver has handled waste transfer notes and weighbridge tickets, and explain what the client expects.
References
We ask referees about reliability on rounds and about safe working around crews and the public.
The full list of checks is on the compliance checks page.

Questions about waste and recycling work
- Do I need a waste carrier registration?
GOV.UK says a business in England must register as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency if it transports waste, and registered carriers appear on a public register. The registration belongs to the business, so the client confirms it before we book a driver.
- What is a hook loader?
A lorry with a hydraulic arm that lifts a container or skip onto the chassis by a hook, carries it and tips or lowers it. It is a rigid lorry, so the licence depends on its weight: category C1 up to 7,500 kg and category C above that.
- Do I load the vehicle as well as drive it?
On an RCV the crew loads and the driver drives and supervises. On skip and grab work the driver operates the equipment. The booking says which, and we tell you before you accept.
- Are waste vehicles exempt from the Driver CPC?
Not by default. GOV.UK lists exemptions that depend on how a vehicle is used, and we do not assume one. The client confirms what applies to its vehicles before we book a driver.
